Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a celebrated English poet who penned one of the most beautiful poems of all time, (Sonnet 43) where she asked, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” To answer Mrs. Browning’s question, and without any further ado, I will list 47 ways.

47. I love the way you make me feel.

Unlike Mrs. Browning’s writings, this is neither a poem nor is it eloquent. The words above are just a list. A list of 47 ways I love you. But it is not of how I love you, or how I love my husband. Nor is it a list of how my husband loves me.

It is a list of ways my husband loves his 1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe car, with it’s flat head six engine, red velvet interior and suicide doors. It is a beauty for sure, but ever since he bought it a little over a week ago, I have been all but invisible. Should I be jealous of a car?

This Sunday, he took it out for a drive. The fact that I was with him was inconsequential. Rather, I was only there to hear the sonnet of love he has for this car. ‘I love her curves. I love how smooth she is. I don’t want to let it out of my sight. It is the best gift I ever got myself.’ And the words of admiration went on and on, stopping only when he took a sip of water or hummed a song. I could have been annoyed, but I wasn’t.

Instead, I sat in the overly comfortable red velvet seats as we drove the back roads of the county looking through the windshield as the old vacuum wipers swiped the misty rain away while we looked at the beautiful, winding mountainous roads before us.

Although it was a cold and dreary day, it was cozy and warm inside the safety of this grand automobile and I was almost lulled to sleep by the car’s quiet engine and smooth ride. As my head rested comfortably on the back of the seat and my eyes were closed, I thought to myself, I love this 1947 Plymouth, too, but not for the reasons my husband does. I love it because…

          1. It is paid for.

          2. It makes my husband happy.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing him happy. How many ways do I love thee? 47 ways…Life is mysterious
